About the Role
Specialist Underwriting Services (SUS) is a specialist Managing General Agent (MGA) operating in the Irish insurance market, providing underwriting expertise, delegated authority solutions, and specialist insurance products through broker partners nationwide.
We are now seeking an Insurance Apprentice to join our underwriting and operations team as part of the national Insurance Practitioner Apprenticeship programme. This is an excellent opportunity for a school leaver or career changer to build a career on the underwriting side of the insurance market while earning a salary and working towards a Level 8 Honours Degree in Insurance Practice, alongside industry-recognised professional qualifications.
Key Responsibilities
- Supporting underwriting and policy administration activities
- Assisting with new business, renewals, endorsements, and mid-term adjustments
- Preparing quotations and underwriting documentation under supervision
- Liaising with broker partners and capacity providers
- Maintaining accurate policy, risk, and client records in line with regulatory and delegated authority requirements
- Supporting compliance, audit, and reporting obligations relevant to an MGA environment
- Completing academic and professional study requirements as part of the apprenticeship programme
The Apprenticeship
This role is offered in conjunction with the Insurance Practitioner Apprenticeship, a three-year earn-while-you-learn programme leading to:
- BA (Hons) in Insurance Practice (QQI Level 8)
- Professional qualifications such as APA / CIP (role dependent)
Student registration fees to ATU Sligo will be funded by company
What We’re Looking For
- Leaving Certificate (or equivalent), including Maths and English (or Irish)
- A strong interest in underwriting and specialist insurance markets
- Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills
- Strong communication and relationship-building ability
- A positive attitude and willingness to learn in a technical environment
- No prior insurance experience required

Minimum Entry Level Requirements:
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Mature students – if over 23 years there are no minimum educational requirements - documented interview required
- FETAC Level 5 qualification holders
- Between 18 and under 23 years – Leaving certificate, minimum of 160 points to include two honours in higher level paper and passes in Maths and English/Irish with specific requirements on grades/levels
