About our Apprentice Programme

We are looking for an ambitious and talented individual(s) who shows the potential to develop into a high performing business professional.

This opportunity is a three year fixed term contract apprentice scheme that provides exposure to all aspects of our business, allowing you to develop your technical expertise as well as professional skills.

 While on the programme, in addition to gaining on the job insurance experience, you will complete the insurance industry professional qualifications APA and CIP/QFA as well as a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Insurance Practice (Apprenticeship) which is Level 8 on the NFQ awarded by IT Sligo.

As an apprentice you will gain in-depth knowledge of risks and the insurance market in order to arrange suitable policies & cover for your clients. You will learn how to be an effective intermediary between our clients and insurance companies.

 

Responsibilities

  • Gather information from your clients, assessing their insurance needs and risk profile;
  • Research insurance companies’ policies and negotiate with underwriters to find the most suitable insurance for your clients at the best price;
  • Ensure that your clients understand the terms and the extent of the cover provided in line with industry regulations;
  • Foresee your clients’ insurance needs, such as policy renewals or amendments;
  • Advise your clients on whether and when they need to make a claim on their policies;
  • Arrange specialised types of insurance cover in complex cases; this may involve preparing reports for insurance underwriters and surveyors and negotiating with insurers;
  • Advise your clients on risk management and help to devise new ways to mitigate risks, for example, by adding security measures such as fencing, surveillance cameras or lighting to commercial properties to reduce the likelihood of a break-in;
  • Build and maintain ongoing relationships with your clients;
  • Keep detailed records and complete administrative tasks such as paperwork and correspondence;
  • Develop relationships with underwriters, surveyors, structural engineers and other professionals;
  • Keep up with changes in the insurance market and in your clients’ industries

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is looking to progress their career in financial services.  Cornmarket will facilitate the apprentice’s further education, support the day offsite in class each week and put together an inter-departmental rotation based on upskilling them as future GI Leadership. By the end of this programme, the successful candidate will have full CIP, and a Level 8 Qualification.

Accountabilities of the Role

Responsibilities will vary dependant on the business area assigned, but will include the following;

More about the programme

The Apprenticeship in Insurance Practice is a programme that runs over three years, which on successful completion, will result in the apprentice receiving a BA honours degree (level 8) in Insurance Practice awarded through the Atlantic Technological University Sligo, the education provider for the programme. The Apprenticeship programme is based on an 'earn and learn' model and the cost of the course is fully funded by the Government while the employer covers the cost of the salary of the apprentice. This means that the apprentices will work full-time in a role with one day a week on average set aside for formal learning, through a distance learning module.

This three-year fixed-term contract as an Insurance Apprentice Practitioner offers a valuable opportunity to gain insight into key areas of our business, helping you build both technical expertise and professional skills. Minimum Entry-Level Requirements:

The main duties that you will be responsible for are:

  • Gaining hands-on experience and learning in the end-to-end claims process, including assessing and processing claims, interpreting policy coverage, engaging with clients and members, and developing exposure to investigations.
  • Developing a high-level understanding of the underwriting process, including learning how risk is assessed, how insurance terms and pricing are determined, and gaining exposure to decision-making frameworks, policy creation, and collaboration with brokers and internal teams.
  • Assisting the Member & Client Relations team with documentation management, extracting statistics on Member and Client interactions, researching the internet for industry trends and observing member and client interactions to understand their needs.
  • Being aware of and complying with the Financial Regulator’s Minimum Competency Code, Consumer Protection Code, and other relevant regulations, ensuring adherence to industry standards.
  • Providing support in various administrative tasks as needed, contributing to the smooth operation of each department, including data entry and correspondence management.

We will select a single apprentice to take part in this on-the-job training programme, commencing September 2025.  This individual will become an integral member of the CIÉ in-house claims management and insurance team with access to experienced managers.

 

About CIÉ Group Risk (Liabilities & Insurances)

Córas Iompair Éireann (CIÉ) is Ireland's national public transport provider. Over 230 million journeys are made annually on our network of national, regional, local and urban services across Iarnród Éireann, Dublin Bus and Bus Éireann.

The CIÉ Group Risk Department, based in Bridgewater House, Islandbridge, Dublin 8 brings together claims & investigations management, insurance management and risk management services, supporting the three Operating Companies, Dublin Bus, Bus Éireann & Iarnród Éireann:

 

1. In-House Claims Management & Investigations Team

The Claims & Investigations team manage the accident liability exposures centrally for the three Operating Companies in the CIÉ Group. Our main function is to actively manage the claims, (both Third Party and Employers Liability) and the own damage Recoveries for the Group. Our objective is to curtail the Companies potential financial exposure for alleged negligence. Our strategy on liability claims is to be proactive while taking a considered view on whether to defend or compromise cases.

 

2. Insurance Team

Our insurance team deliver a comprehensive value for money Insurance programme tailored to serve the best needs of the organisation and Operating Companies. As Certified Insurance Practitioners, we establish the scope of Insurance cover sought, the limits and cost, and thereafter liaise with Brokers to negotiate and arrange the placement of agreed cover. We engage with the Brokers on Market Submissions and provide extensive advice and support around the areas of policy renewal, and the management of Contracts, Licences and Agreements.

 

3. Risk Team

The principal objectives of the risk advisory service that we provide are to ensure the most economic and efficient management of risk within the organisation and to deliver valuable insights into the issues specific to the provision of public transport. We assist in the delivery of leadership and guidance regarding emerging risks and risk performance as against peer and industry assessments while ensuring we are compliant with legislative and regulatory changes..

 

Role Profile

This position is geared towards someone who is flexible, adaptable, and interested in career progression.

We are seeking an apprentice with the right attitude, i.e. an innate desire for continual learning, willingness to work as part of a team in getting the job done and focussed in self-developing so as to challenge the status quo when needed. Strong technical, analytical and communication skills are a must.

The successful candidate will be exposed to all areas of the business: from dealing with third party claims, following up with investigations, determining appropriate resolution channels to engaging with Brokers and Underwriters in the procurement of insurances.

It is to be expected that the role and responsibilities will develop in line with the candidate’s progression through the Apprentice Programme.

 

An example of claims duties includes but is not limited to:

  • Investigate and follow up Customer care complaints
  • Acknowledging letters of claim and commencing investigation.
  • Requesting accident reports and arranging driver interviews as well as securing CCTV footage and witness statements.
  • Determining evidential requirements including documents, CCTV, photographs, reports and records
  • Assisting with the arrangement of Engineering / Locus Inspections
  • Arranging medical examinations and liaising with direct claimants 
  • Determining whether to refer claims to PIAB for assessment; determining whether to accept PIAB award
  • Referring file to CIÉ Group Solicitors Office or forwarding to an external agent. Assisting in the preparation of briefs/materials for legal team and supporting litigation/ settlement processes
  • Making recommendations on liability and quantum
  • Requesting follow up information from claimant’s representatives and from our clients.
  • Requisitioning cheques and other associated administrative duties
  • Maintaining PIAB Diary in Excel
  • Adjustment and revaluation of files on CMS Computer System
  • Working as part of Investigations Team and generally supporting work in the Office

 

An example of insurance duties includes but is not limited to:

  • Developing triangulations for submission to the market
  • Assisting in the preparation of market submissions as at each renewal date
  • Liaising with the Brokers to ensure renewals are delivered on time and within budget

Role Responsibilities

  • Quote, convert, renew, and maintain general insurance policies for both new and existing customers, ensuring accuracy and compliance with company standards.

The Apprenticeship programme is a work-based learning programme and requires timely submission of on the job assessments, attendance at and successful attainment of ATU Sligo and CIP exams as part of the programme.
